The United Nations Human Settlements Programme, UN-Habitat, is the agency for human settlements. It is mandated by the UN General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities with the goal of providing adequate shelter for all.

UN-Habitat promotes the stronger commitment of national and local governments as well as other relevant stakeholders to work towards the realization of a world with economically productive, socially inclusive and environmentally sustainable cities and other human settlements.

The main focus of the Housing Unit relates to the Habitat Agenda goal “Adequate Housing for All”, and Focus Area 5: “Housing and Slum Upgrading” of Strategic and Institutional Plan, 2014-2019. The Unit works normatively as well as provides technical advice and operational support to improve access to housing for the world’s poor and other groups in vulnerable situations, particularly in developing countries and countries in transition.

The UN-HABITAT – Mediterranean City to City Migration Project internship is for 6 months.

The Internship is UNPAID and full-time.

Interns work five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.

Responsibilities

Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual’s background; the intern’s assigned office as well as the internship period.
Under the Supervision of the Programme Officer, the intern will:
– Assist increase migration-related knowledge by collaborating on city migration profiles identifying the migration situation, and cities’ priorities, capacities and practices for migrants’ access to rights,
including the right to adequate housing and basic services;
– Support in enhancing the exchange of technical expertise between cities on topics related to migration governance; namely access to adequate housing and basic services;
– Enhance communication within the network and towards the public at large by participating in partner meetings, city network meetings, international conferences, and sharing knowledge amongst
the partner network via IT-based information-gathering and exchange tools (including expert network; data and document repository);
– Engage in participatory processes of problem identification through city stakeholder groups and the consequent elaboration of city priority papers that can serve as a foundation for the development
of targeted projects.

Education

Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:
a. Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
b. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent);
c. Have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation.
Be computer literate in standard software applications.

Have demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter;

Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Preferred area of study: Architecture, Urban Planning, Geography, Law, Political Science, Economics, Real Estate, Public Policy, International Development with an urban focus or other social sciences or related areas.

Work Experience

Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the programme.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this internship, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another UN Language is desirable.
