Strategic Planning Specialist

DREAMS Innovation Challenge

JSI Research & Training Institute, Inc., a leader in the field of international public health, is currently recruiting a roster of consultants under the DREAMS Innovation Challenge project, an initiative aimed at reducing HIV incidence among girls and young women by 40% in Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, South Africa, Swaziland, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.

JSI supports 45 organizations to deliver high-quality gender-responsive programming in each of the 6 DREAMS Innovation Challenge focus areas: strengthening capacity for service delivery; keeping girls in secondary school; linking men to services; supporting pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP); providing a bridge to employment; and applying data to increase impact (http://www.dreamspartnership.org/innovation-challenge/).

We are currently looking for a Strategic Planning Specialist to support and guide one partner organization in Kenya through a comprehensive strategic planning process. The organization engages women in Kenya in HIV and AIDS Prevention, care and support, gender/human rights awareness, advocacy and economic empowerment. The organization serves as a common voice for these vulnerable populations in efforts to increase their access to quality services, reduce stigma and discrimination, while engaging various stakeholders in advocacy and policy dialogue.

The consultant will review any existing strategy documents and come up with a detailed plan for how to work with the organization to develop a comprehensive strategic plan. Ultimately, it is expected that the partner organization will have a strategic plan that is a tool to guide planning, resource mobilization and implementation of organizational priorities.

The consultant is expected to work with the partner organization in a participatory manner and involve as many key staff as possible. A variety of methodologies should be utilized to stimulate creative thinking and manage discussions. The consultant acts as a facilitator and is not expected to write the strategic plan but rather to guide and support the partner organization to develop a strategic plan (including providing a template).

The work is expected to take no more than 2o days and the consultant must be available to start by May 25, 2018.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's or a related advanced degree, in international, sustainable, and/or organizational development, development studies, business, or other discipline relevant to DREAMS.
  • Substantial demonstrated experience in developing the capacity of community-based organizations and networks.
  • Strong planning and inter-cultural communication skills required.
  • Proficiency with activities, methods and experience in the capacity development field.
  • Experience working on other US Government-funded projects pertaining to gender, sexual reproductive health, women and youth programming.
  • Ability to develop creative and pragmatic approaches to capacity support.
  • Experience in development of materials and processes for capacity strengthening including training, mentoring and coaching of partners, peer learning and other methodologies.
  • Confident and clear communication skills, with an ability to impart knowledge and experience in an accessible and clear manner.
  • Ability to perform and prioritize multiple tasks.
  • Advanced skills in MS Office
  • Excellent communications skills in English and Swahili.
