The African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC) is an international non-profit, non-governmental research organization committed to conducting high quality and policy relevant research on population, health, education and development issues facing sub-Saharan Africa.

APHRC through its flagship program, The Consortium for Advanced Research Training in Africa (CARTA) an Africa-based, Africa-led initiative which seeks to rebuild and strengthen the capacity of African universities to produce well-trained and skilled researchers and scholars in Africa by Africans. The program addresses an important challenge facing the African academy i.e. the scarcity of a robust research and training infrastructure capable of offering the type of vibrant and sustained doctoral training necessary to attract, train and retain the continent's brightest minds. CARTA seeks to recruit a Manager to manage the PhD and postdoctoral training component of the program.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage day-to-day operations of CARTAs PhD and Postdoctoral training program;
  • Lead the selection of CARTA fellows and review their applications for research and conference grants
  • Oversee, monitor and mentor fellows, providing them support and guidance as may be needed
  • Lead curriculum development and review for the Joint Advanced Seminars (JAS)
  • Lead the organization and management of CARTA JASs
  • Lead post-doctoral training for CARTA graduates (post-doctoral fellowships and re-entry grant management)
  • Support proposal development and fundraising efforts for CARTA activities
  • Manage donor relations including responding to queries, preparation of donor reports and ensuring grant conditions are met
  • Oversee grants negotiations and sub-awards with grantees
  • Facilitate in CARTA workshops
  • Manage HR functions and oversee staff training and mentorship to ensure the project team has the necessary skills and knowledge to plan, implement, and monitor CARTA activities
  • Monitor project-specific budgets related to training and maintain efficient use of resources
  • Engage critically with the programme through careful evaluation leading to the production of academic publications about the program, and
  • Engage in academic discourse about pedagogic methods that leads new approaches to learning and enthuses graduates to transform teaching and research

Qualifications and Experience:

· PhD in the physical or social sciences

· Strong interest and 3 years’ experience in research capacity building and activities

· Must have prior experience working in developing short courses for researchers and research institutions

· Experience in supervising postgraduate students

· Experience working in research or academic institution will be an added advantage

· Excellent administration and leadership skills

· Excellent writing and presentation skills, and

· Proven ability to work in a team

How can you make a difference?

The purpose is to deepen regional collaboration with key public sector stakeholders and provide an interface for environmental scanning, knowledge exchange, resource mobilization, and policy influence. S/He may also serve as a focal point and resource for colleagues on specific thematic areas of strategic relevance for partnership development. The key result is to ensure greater visibility for UNICEF and influence in support of its mission.

This will involve:

1.Provides support to new partnerships and resource mobilization, working with UNICEF colleagues to identify partnership and resource mobilization needs and provide information to broker resource mobilization agreements to meet those needs. Receives and screens inquiries from potential collaborators and facilitates communication with appropriate UNICEF staff. Scans and scouts external environment within designated partnership area for opportunities and risks and shares information in a timely fashion with relevant UNICEF staff. Provides logistical and programmatic support to senior management and other UNICEF staff in corporate engagement and interaction with assigned partners.

2.Develops and maintains deep knowledge and familiarity with current and prospective partners and relevant stakeholders, managing a database of key contacts and to UNICEF’s base of knowledge on partnership and resource mobilization. Expands UNICEF’s network of key interlocutors to build stronger relationships between UNICEF and governments, other key-decision makers, regional development institutions, foundations, the private sector, international financial institutions and/or relevant constituencies.

3.Supports the implementation of partnership engagement and resource mobilization plans.

4.Acts as focal point for COs in the identification and pursuit of opportunities for outreach, engagement, policy influence and collaboration, including on how to anticipate and respond to partners’ concerns and priorities, ensure that UNICEF’s interests, perspectives, and knowledge are taken into account in relevant policy and institutional processes, and ensure that they are fully aware of UNICEF’s perspectives, policies, priorities and capabilities.

5.Contributes to the development of new partnership and resource mobilization practices and approaches by formulating recommendations for action based on on-going monitoring, analyzing current trends within designated partners and formulating recommendations for strategy approaches and message development.

6.Contributes to strategies for engagement and the development of communications products to enhance UNICEF’s visibility and influence with existing and prospective partners and key stakeholders by providing analysis of the current environment and trends and formulating recommendations for strategy approaches and message development. Works closely with UNICEF’s colleagues to ensure that policy advocacy and outreach is strongly grounded in the experience and insights of the programmes that UNICEF’s supports. Contributes written inputs for communications instruments that best inform and influence decision makers.

7. Performs other related duties as assigned by the supervisor to ensure the success of the team, including guiding, training, and coaching short-term staff, including interns and consultants, as needed.

An Advanced university in international development, public affairs, international relations, political science or other related field.*

*A first University Degree in a relevant field combined withadditional years ofprofessional experience may be accepted in lieu of an Advanced University Degree.


At least two (2) years of progressively responsible professional experience in external relations, liaison and/or any resource-mobilization related activities, preferably in an international organization is required. Experience in Africa a plus.

Language Requirements:

Fluency in English is required with knowledge of another UN language considered as an asset.

Job Description: Our client is looking to recruit an accountant who will be responsible for analyzing financial information to inform the business strategy, forecast, collect, maintain and provide accurate data and information to support management in making strategic business decisions, as well as bridge the gap between finance and organization’s operations.


Role Duties & Responsibilities

  • Coordinating and monitoring annual budgets for management’s decision making and to ensure that revenue and expenditure is kept in line with the budget.
  • Advising management on proper financial planning and control by preparing and producing monthly management accounting reports for decision making.
  • Determine and implement cost accounting procedures and methods.
  • Planning, studying and collecting data to determine costs of business activity such as raw material purchases, inventory and labor.
  • Responsible for the preparation and analysis of cost reports; providing management with reports specifying and comparing factors affecting prices and profitability of products.
  • Ensuring minimal variance between actual and standard costs
  • Advising on product profitability and pricing structures, evaluating sanctions and monitoring contract prices renewals
  • Performs various cost analysis procedures and perform cost allocations for distribution and manufacturing
  • Analyze changes in product design, raw materials and manufacturing methods to determine effects on costs.
  • Prepare, analyze and report weekly, monthly, quarterly and periodically gross margins by brand and by customer.
  • Prepare detailed account analysis and reconcile sales, cost and inventory and liability accounts by customer channel and category.
  • Assist is various projects aimed at identifying and realizing cost savings.
  • Preparation of financial reports for decision making including the Monthly Budget Control
  • Review standard and actual costs for variances and report variances to management for decision-making purposes.
  • Accumulate and apply overhead costs as required by generally accepted accounting principles
  • Participate in Work-In-Process, Engineering Stocks and Finished Stocks periodic stock take exercises verification of fixed assets and project evaluations; Overseeing inventory checks, obviously maintaining accurate accounts for Raw Materials/WIP/Finished Goods, Labor, Shipping, Customs & Duties, Overhead and everything else that goes into COGS.
  • Ensure timely submission, accuracy and validity of inventory and gross margin schedules to management.
  • Prepare collateral reporting.
  • Participate in TREO processing and liaison with Customs & Clearing agents for imports.
  • Coordinate with IT department for system issues, maintenance and development on functions such as production, purchasing, import/ export, accounts payable, accounts receivable, import/ export IT, receiving, shipping and others.
  • Support and assist internal department reporting requirements such as audit schedules, tax schedules and others.
  • Maintain internal control documentation and test internal controls.
  • Also helps in determining pricing of various product.
  • Assist in establishing and reviewing performance standards and measures with a particular emphasis on areas with cost implications.
  • Monitor on a continuing basis organization-wide KPIs to determine performance against targets on cost, productivity, efficiency, quality and timelines.
  • Undertake special projects as and when required to do so by management.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting/ Business/ Finance or equivalent is mandatory
  • Minimum 6years’ experience in manufacturing industry mostly handling cost
  • Candidates must possess CIMA/ CPA(K)/ACCA qualification or equivalent
  • High numeric abilities
  • Advanced computer skills
  • Advanced working knowledge of SAP ERP

Other Desirable Attributes

  • Must demonstrate people management abilities.
  • Has ability to identify drivers of an issue and apply creative thinking in identifying and resolving opportunities.
  • Prior Financial Accounting and/or internal control framework experience is a plus for proper understanding of manufacturing accounts requirements.

Kenya: NorCross Regional Health Advisor – Africa

Norwegian Red Cross is a member of the world wide Red Cross Movement working in the fields of relief and assistance and the development of sister Red Cross Societies. Norwegian Red Cross has established regional and country representations, to ensure proximity to key partner Red Cross / Red Crescent Societies as well as donors and international partners.

The Regional Health Advisor Africa has an important role in supporting NorCross long term health programs, with quality assurance of reports and field activities of the NorCross. The position holder will also contribute to the NorCross support to our Red Cross Movement partners Emergency response, with advise on NorCross support to the Federations Emergency Appeals.

This implies to identify and analyse public health threats arising in Africa, slow onset emergencies and to develop response strategies and advise Country Managers and Partner National Societies accordingly. This includes communicable diseases and outbreaks associated with naturally or man-made disasters and crises.

The Regional Health Advisor must be available for short notice, short term assessment missions when needed/requested in order to advise on NorCross support to the Federation and partner National Societies Emergency Appeals.
Main responsibilities: **

-Support and advise Norcross Country Managers and partner Red Cross National Societies; ensure quality of program development, implementation, monitoring, and reporting through frequent field visits to the programs.

-Contribute to technical discussions and coordination vis a vis Health Advisor and Public health in Emergencies Coordinator at HQ, Health Coordinators and delegates in other regions and the wider Africa team

-Maintain in-depth knowledge of Red Cross/Red Crescent health activities within the relevant contexts

-In close coordination with the Africa team, develop and maintain networks and partnerships with relevant national and international partners and organizations.

-Brief and debrief delegates

-Ensure coherence with other relevant NorCross policies such as gender, corruption and fraud, etc.

-Monitor developments in public health in emergencies, in- and outside the RC Movement, in specific monitoring of epidemiological data, health indicators, risks, disaster and disease patterns for analysis and early detection of health concerns, disease outbreaks or epidemics in the Region

-Participate in (inter-)national conferences and working groups related to area of responsibility

Qualifications and Personal Skills we are looking for:

  • A Master’s Degree in Public Health is a minimum requirement.

-Minimum 3 years work experience in international emergency assistance

-Field experience of working for a minimum of 3 years in a development country, preferably with the RC Movement

-Willingness to travel up to 70% of the time

Skills and Knowledge:

-Advanced knowledge of Red Cross & Red Crescent Movement

-Advanced knowledge of humanitarian field work

-Advanced knowledge of project management

-Intermediate knowledge of relevant IT tools and systems

-Knowledge of gender and diversity considerations in humanitarian contexts
